To the right, is Willson & Dowling Decorative Plasterers Ltd. This works has seen other trades including garage, upholstery and joinery.

A rather confusing title, but this road ahead is simply called Crookes, which also happens to be the name of the district it passes through. To the left, is The Old Grindstone. To the right, hardly seen behind the trees, is new build. When I lived in Crookes, there in the ‘60s, was a mixed range of old cottages, from 2–20 Crookes. At 22/24 was The Old Original Grindstone – 26/30 Raffo’s Gift Shop & Hardware Dealers – 34/36 Cecil P Oldham, Electrical Engineer and Bicycle Dealer. "Ernie", as we knew him, also ran a cycling club based in Totley, of which I was a member. From 40–60, more houses in the row, which included Sam Hoole & Sons, Coal Dealers, who delivered our coal at Crookes 239a. At number 62 was Mrs A Redford, Fruitier and Greengrocer. All were gone by the ‘70s. Originally, this was a tram route - Crookes to Handsworth. Present day use for this old works, is Willson & Dowling Decorative Plasterers Ltd. It's seen a variety of professions, from garage, to upholstery and joinery. A friend tells me that it started life as, The Model Dairy Farm. A date stone reads, MODEL DAIRY FARM 1892. The lane runs from Crookes, down to the wooden fence and then does a ninety degree turn to School Road, so it can be approached from two directions. This has an advantage in that a rear side entrance door http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1148713 can be reversed up to for loading and offloading. Not a lot of room for manoeuvring though.

Typically, the roads run steeply out of Crookes. This one drops down to Commonside and the route from Intake to Walkley, a former tramway.
