Corner of Ethelburga Road
Part of a relatively short roadside stretch on the London Loop going through Harold Wood. Some fairly serious road names along here. In quick succession we pass Athelstan, Ethelburga and Archibald Roads. Then on to Gubbins Lane round the corner.

Harold Wood: The King Harold
The date plaque high up in the gable states 1868, which makes the pub exactly contemporary with the opening of Image, and its function as the hotel for the station is confirmed on the old large scale Ordnance Survey map of 1896 where it is shown as the King Harold Hotel.

Pioneer main-line Bo-Bo Electric locomotive at Harold Wood station
View NE, towards Colchester etc. on the ex-GE main line from Liverpool Street. No. 26002 was new and only the second of the production series of these Class EM1 locomotives built by Metropolitan-Vickers for the 1,500v overhead electrification between Manchester and Sheffield/Wath, which was currently in progress but not completed until June 1954. Here it was only November 1950, but the main line Liverpool Street - Shenfield had been electrified since September 1949. The locomotive's regenerative braking system may have been under test here, as it is coming down Brentwood Bank.

Harold Wood station
Harold Wood station was first opened on 1st December 1868 by the Great Eastern Railway on their main line. Two additional tracks which are normally used by fast services were provided in 1934 by the London & North Eastern Railway. This view looks from the down slow line towards Brentwood and Shenfield. The fast lines are away to the right, beyond the metal fence.
