The Garrison Gateway and Clock Tower, Purfleet
The Gateway and attached walls date from c1760s, to the designs of James Gabriel Montresor, Royal Engineer. The eight-day quarter clock was made by London clock maker, Aynsworth Thwaites, of Clerkenwell in 1772.

Clock tower, Purfleet
One of few surviving reminders of Purfleet's (almost 200) years as the main location for testing and storing gunpowder. Former proof house, Purfleet
One of few surviving reminders of Purfleet's (almost 200) years as the main location for testing and storing gunpowder. It would have been tested in this modest chapel-like building and, if it reached the requisite standard, then stored in the magazines. War 1770-1945!
The building in the background is number 5 magazine of the Purfleet gunpowder store built around 1770. It is now a military museum see http://www.purfleet-heritage.com/index.html The lump of metal in the foreground is the rocket nozzle from a V2 rocket unearthed while building the A13 between Wennington and Aveley in 1997. 2013 update the V2 rocket engine has now been loaned to the Lashenden Air Museum in Kent http://www.lashendenairwarfaremuseum.co.uk/index.html

These are built on old garrison land, to very vaguely match the style of the military buildings formerly here. One remains on the right, Magazine 5, now an ancient monument and part of the heritage centre here.
