South Street, Romford
Although Romford was established as a market town in the 13th century, it was after the railway arrived in 1839 that it developed as a major suburban centre on the eastern edge of the Greater London conurbation. South Street is part of the main retail area and the Liberty Shopping Centre was opened in the 1960s.

Is it a boat?
The Arcade is dominated by a rather strange piece of contemporary artwork which rather looks like a boat mounted on stilts with lamps fitted to the bottom. View taken looking east-northeast.

Romford: Stewards Walk
Stewards Walk is a shopping arcade leading off the pedestrianized section of South Street. The architects thoughtfully incorporated a clock into the design of the entrance. As ever this is all very fine and dandy as long as the clock tells the right time. As soon as it doesn't the whole edifice takes on a look of woebegone lack of maintenance. Here the clock with the face pointing this way was correct, but the clock on the face pointing left had stopped at five past four...

Lamp post in the town centre
Apologies if the image size is too small for Geograph - I had to crop the top edge off using Picnik as I accidentally had my finger over part of the camera lens and it created a black splodge at the top of the image. I can resize the image if needed. The subject of the photo here is the lamp post - one of many which light the pedestrianised town centre. It is called an Urbis St Giles and is the sister of another Urbis lantern I have pictured on Geograph, the Albany, although it is not quite as common. This particular example is not in its best condition, however, as one lantern on the double bracket is missing, and the top lantern looks to have the bottom portion of its bowl missing! View taken from the end of Brewery Walk, although I'm unsure of the geographical location.
