Many houses in this area have paved over front gardens where vehicles can be kept off the road. These big gates for added security are popular as well.
I guess they've had problems. No point making it too easy for the villains.

Emerson Park station
The Romford to Upminster Line was constructed in 1893 as a branch of the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway from Upminster. This opened on 7th June 1893 at a second station in Romford which was combined with the main station at Romford in 1934. Emerson Park station was opened on 1st October 1909 as Emerson Park Halt. The half hourly London Overground train from Romford to Upminster has just left from the single bi-directional platform and disappeared round the corner ahead.
