Agile Climber
The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is an agile climber, much more so than the grey. Swift and sure movement, climbing on slender tree branches that would surely not support the full weight of the squirrel; however, he has been, and gone, before this theory is put to the test. A joy to watch, and explains why the squirrel seems to vanish without trace. http://www.britishwildlifecentre.co.uk/animals/redsquirrel.htm

Adders at the British Wildlife Centre, Newchapel, Surrey
A sunny spring morning brought out three male adders (Vipera berus), to bask. In 2011, they were first seen on 24th February; but not particularly active. No sign of the females, as yet. http://www.britishwildlifecentre.co.uk/index.htm

'Robin', the little owl (Athene noctua), seen perched on the Keeper's glove. This little chap is fully grown. The little owl is the most commonly seen owl in Britain, but is a recent arrival, having been introduced into southern England by the Victorians. They are now found throughout lowland England and Wales. http://www.britishwildlifecentre.co.uk/index.htm

Adder at the British Wildlife Centre, Newchapel, Surrey
Female adder (Vipera berus), basking in the sun. Whilst it was in this location, in the adder enclosure, for several hours, its head was hidden for most of the time. This is the larger of the two females. Today, another photographer reported that he had seen a young adder; bringing the total, in the enclosure, to at least five.

Adder at the British Wildlife Centre, Newchapel, Surrey
Female adder (Vipera berus). When I first saw the adder, it was more stretched out on the log pile. Even though I was on the far side of the enclosure, it must have seen me, as it retreated to this position.
