Gatwick Express blocks all lines
A Gatwick Express composed of two class 442 units approaches Gatwick Airport and is switched from the down fast line at the extreme right to platform 1 at the extreme left, blocking all lines in the process. The bizarre platform allocation at Gatwick seems to date from the days when baggage could be checked in at Victoria station, and the low numbered platforms at the left offered a chance to handle this baggage onward at minimum investment in infrastructure - a level crossing over the platform 1 line. The result has been many years of niggling delays to trains through Gatwick. In the distance is Horley station.

Bedford-Brighton service approaches Gatwick Airport
The First Capital Connect service is composed of unit 319 215 leading and 319 427 trailing. The leading unit is still in the basic livery of its former operator, Southern, although branded First Capital Connect. The train is on the down fast line, but had been held at the signal at the left for a few minutes, not unusual outside Gatwick.

Gatwick: Main London to Brighton railway line
Viewed looking towards Horley station from the footbridge north of Gatwick Airport station, Stephen's Image, with its prominent chimney at either end, is just visible in the distance. The railway has been here since 1841. As an aside looking at the 1879 Edition of the Ordnance Survey map some text has been added in the vicinity that says: "British Sepulchral Urn, Flint Arrow Heads, and Bronze Roman Coins found here." Perhaps they were found during the construction of the railway.
