Lowfield Heath: Old Brighton Road South
Up until about 1956 this road was the main A23 between London and Brighton. However the main runway of the new Gatwick Airport was constructed straight across it here, and the A23 was diverted along a new dual carriageway by the current airport South Terminal site. The airport's Perimeter Road South crosses over the route of the old road immediately beyond the gate, and this is a good venue for aircraft spotters, young and old as evidenced by the pair at the gate, to view what's landing and taking off.

The southern side of Gatwick Airport
A view from the runway. A prominent feature is the short spire of St Michael & All Angels, Lowfield Heath. It is Grade II listed and the only surviving building from the former village which has been swallowed up by the airport and associated activities.
