The pond at Friday Street, in October (3)
Looking north towards Pond Cottage from the west side of the pond. The pond has industrial origins - as a millpond for the Surrey iron industry.

Galletted stonework at Pond Cottage, Friday Street
The blocks of sandstone in this wall are tinged both green and red - evidence that the rock contains iron compounds. The stonework has been decorated by galletting - little chips of darkish stone have been pressed into the jointing (mortar courses). Often, in this area of England, galletting consists of chips of flint, but in this instance it looks as if chips of sandstone have been used - matching exactly the main building blocks. Until very recently I knew of no examples of galletting outside SE England, but my friend ceridwen http://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/6699 reports finding an old house with galletted stonework in Pennsylvania, USA http://www.blipfoto.com/entry/1422526.

Pond Cottage, Friday Street
Notice the building materials - local stone for the ground floor (very ferrous-looking), red brick for the upper storey. The post box housed in the gate post is quite tiny, with the royal cipher of King Edward VII, and the words 'Letters Only'. For a closer look, see: Image

Miniature GPO postbox at Friday Street
This little postbox, fitted into a gate post at Pond Cottage http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2657107, is no more than about 18 inches (45cm) high - a size which seems just right in this tiny hamlet. The royal cipher appears to be that of King Edward VII. For the wider context, see Image Compare with a rather similar box found by Gary Rogers in Lancashire: Image
