Driveway leading to Newbuildings Place
In the Sussex volume of 'The Buildings of England', Nairn and Pevsner describe Newbuildings Place as 'late Artisan Mannerist', giving a date of 1683. I've often wondered what was meant by 'Artisan Mannerist', so I was keen to get a view of the house.
It turned out to be difficult to get a view from public space. This shot does at least show the rounded (Dutch influenced?) gables at the south end of the house - said by Nairn and Pevsner to be its most distinctive feature.
For anyone who's interested, the entry in Pevsner is listed under 'Shipley'.
