Travellers are alighting from the small train on the left. As it's a Saturday they may be returning from London after a day out shopping. The other train is going very fast towards London.

The Downgate
The cattle grid marking the western end of Hungerford Common, the Downgate. The adjacent pub has the same name, being used in past times by commoners returning to the town after tending their animals, and today being used by people just returning to the town after a walk.

The Downgate, Hungerford
This pub is located adjacent to the gate and cattle grid leading on to Hungerford Common. It was acquired by Arkell's, a Swindon brewery, in 1994. Close inspection of the picture reveals the reflection of a lady enjoying a large glass of wine at one of the outside tables.
