Statue of fame, Greenham Gardens, Newbury
This statue features "fame", and was part of a larger statue featuring Queen Victoria in Market Place, unveiled on the 24th of July 1903. The original statue had a 22 foot wide cross shaped base which was removed when the main part of the monument featuring Queen Victoria was relocated in 1966 to its current position in Victoria Park, after spending 33 years dismantled in Greenham Gardens. "Fame" has been damaged over the years, and is missing most of one arm. Most of the damage is to the rear. For the rest of the statue in Victoria Park, see Image For a closer look at the front of fame, see Image For the rear of fame, see Image One may ask, how does one know that this statue is the "fame" from Queen Victoria's statue? There is a signature by the sculptor John Broad (who sculpted the statue of Queen Victoria with Arthur E. Pearce to the base stone of "fame"). For the signature, see Image

Greenham House (Newbury Gardens Day Nursery)
Now a nursery, Greenham House was a boarding school for boys from around 1796 to 1811. The school was run by The Reverend James Bicheno, who was the Baptist Minister for Newbury from 1780 to 1807. He was a pioneering campaigner against the slave trade, promoting petitions to Parliament for the abolition of the slave trade in 1788 and 1792. The latter was signed by 333 people (a lot back then!)

Station Road, Newbury
No prizes for guessing where this leads. Station Road was a through road between Greenham Road (the A339) and Bartholomew Street, but the section after Link Road has been closed to motor vehicles since the 22nd of August 2022.
