Memorial on market place
Don't know what it is a memorial for but there used to be some underground toilets here and probably still are under the paving.

An Art Nouveau 8
The premises now occupied by the Oxfam shop were, years ago, a health food store and café 'The High Buttery', which supplied then-exotic items such as natural yoghurt and spices. The building, originally a boot shop, has some fine Art Nouveau details; note the styling of the number 8. The bookshop is one of the largest Oxfam bookshops in the country. https://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/local-shops/oxfam-bookshop-reading At the end of the street is 'Jackson's Corner' where until recently Jackson's department store sold school uniforms (and probably little else).

Former bank building, 3-5 King Street
Built in 1836 for J & C Simonds Bank (owned by the Reading brewery family - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simonds_Brewery ). The business was sold in 1913 to Barclays Bank who eventually closed the branch, not long after this picture was taken in 2008 Image . The building is Grade II listed - details here http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1113497 . It has planning consent for conversion to a restaurant.
