Old Milepost by the A49, Preston Road, Charnock Richard Parish
Cast iron post by the A49, in parish of CHARNOCK RICHARD (CHORLEY District), was Preston Road, 100m East of Yew Tree Villas (approx SD 5489 1545), now moved to cross roads of Preston Road, Church Lane and Brook Lane. Wigan fan iron casting, erected by the Wigan & Preston (south of Yarrow) turnpike trust in the 19th century.

Milestone at Charnock Richard
This ornate cast-iron milestone stands alongside Preston Road (A49) opposite Church Lane. It indicates that we are 7 miles from Wigan and 10 miles from Preston. It also carries the date 1937 and the name of Haigh Foundry (presumably where it was cast).
The mile post was stolen in the 1990s, but recovered and refurbished in 2012 when it was reinstated to its current position (http://www.chorley-guardian.co.uk/news/local/milestone-returns-after-15-years-1-4772674 Chorley Guardian).
The Charnock Richard milepost was one of six similar ones manufactured at Haigh foundry in 1837. The only other remaining one is that at Standish (Langtree).

Christ Church, a Church of England church, was built in 1856-60 of Sandstone Rubble by Harrison of Wigan. It is a grade II Listed Building (English Heritage ID:357532 http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-357532-christ-church-charnock-richard-lancashir British Listed Buildings).
