Tulketh Mill, Balcarres Street, Preston
Former cotton mill, the best of the city's survivors. By F.W. Dixon, 1905-06. Fireproof construction - concrete, steel and cast iron. The tremendous chimney has its own listing. Grade II listed. Its future seems reasonably certain since conversion into a call centre for Carphone Warehouse, its present occupants perhaps the less-unionised C21st equivalents of their C19th forebears. The unfortunate building in front has been added since 2008: Image

Tulketh Mill, Preston
In my opinion this is the best view as it shows the fine chimney and engine house to best advantage. The white scar indicates the position of the demolished boiler house. The mill was opened in 1906 and the engine house contained a massive J & E Wood cross compound of 2000 horsepower with Corliss valve cylinders 29" & 58" bores by 60" stroke. The flywheel was 24' diameter and grooved for 44 cotton driving ropes. The chimney was originally 77 yards but is now shorter.

Lancaster Canal and Tulketh Mill
John Rennie's canal dates from the last years of the 18th century, while the mill was built in the early years of the 20th. It was one of the last of Preston's cotton mills to close. It's future was secured when it was taken over by the Littlewoods Catalogue Company. Today it a call centre for Carphone Warehouse. The imposing mill chimney one of the few to survive has in fact been lowered twice over the years

Blackpool Road
This punning car wash seems to attract customers with its friendly Polish hand polishers. 'Thank you - Dziekuje' reads the bucket. (Part of a circular walk around Preston – continues at Image)
