Primrose Mill, Preston
This manufactory dates to the early 1860s although carrying a date of 1907 on a beam over the large door - this probably relates to a rebuilding. Although probably originally fitted with a beam engine, by the 1890s the power was provided by a horizontal single cylinder steam engine 16" x 36" and developing 67 horsepower at 65.5 rpm. It would appear this was used for cotton weaving.

Centenary Mill
This former mill was once part of the mighty Horrocks cotton empire. Horrocks's cotton was known the world over from the 1800s to the 1960s, and Preston was the centre of spinning and weaving. A larger mill a few hundred yards away from this one was demolished in the 1980s, but although this building remains it is now light industrial units.

Centenary Mill, Preston
Built 1895 for Horrockses, Crewdson & Co Ltd. RSJ framing and concrete floors. The engine house (not visible in this view) contained a Musgrave horizontal four cylinder triple expansion engine with cylinders 24.25", 36" & 40" (2) x 6' stroke. It was of about 2000 horsepower and drove by ropes. Now converted to apartments with the engine house forming a huge and empty lobby and access up through the rope race. This shows an entrance door fronting the main road in front of the mill.
