Gales Brewery, Horndean
Comment originally read "Established in 1847, Gales are now the only major, surviving independent family brewing company in Hampshire."
UPDATE Nov-2005 : Gales has now been bought out by Fullers, who have stopped all brewing on the site. It's possible that the site may still be used for distribution, although the famous Hampshire brews are now made in Chiswick :-(

Old Milestone by the A3, London Road, Horndean
Stone post (plate lost) by the A3, in parish of Horndean (East Hampshire District), London Road, opposite No.80, in pavement, in wide alcove with back to brick wall, on West side of road. Portsmouth limestone block and plate, erected by the Portsmouth & Sheet Bridge turnpike trust in the 19th century.
Inscription reads:-

Gale & Co. Brewery, Horndean
The brewery buildings are on London Road in Horndean and date back to 1869. Gale's Brewery closed in 2006. The Victorian red brick buildings now have conservation status.
