Old Carlton Cinema-Cosham
The old Carlton Cinema at Cosham awaiting demolition. The site is being turned over to (yes, you've guessed it!) housing. The Carlton Cinema was opened on 28th Feb. 1934 by Jack Buchanan. Several people were killed when a bomb hit the projection room roof on 5th Dec. 1940. It was reopened a year later and later became an Essoldo and a Cannon who tripled it in 1982. In 1989 the roof was blown off by a gale and it took 4 months to repair it. By now an ABC, it briefly shut in Jan. 2003 before being run by two more tenants until 1st Nov. 2007. The landlord applied for planning permission to demolish it for flats but later withdrew his application. The council wants an archaeological dig if this is demolished as this is the site of a medieval village.
