Entrance to Colts Bay, off Barrack Lane
The entrance to Colts Bay is off Barrack Lane, near Coastguards Parade. Colts Bay is an upmarket housing development, like much of this part of Aldric, which was developed from 1928 onwards. The entrance to Colts Bay is prominently marked "Strictly Private".
When the area of the Aldwick Bay Estate was developed, it was known in its early years as the "Sussex Riviera". In its heyday it was popular with members of the Royal family, as well as film stars such as Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Jack Hawkins. It did have, and probably still has, a private beach area. The area retains its ambiance of exclusivity and the feeling that "ordinary" tourists are not encouraged, and indeed there is little for them to do here anyway.

Notice to dog owners
As part of its charmingly titled "Scoop-the-Poop Campaign", Arun District Council has placed these notices around their area. This one is at the side of Barrack Lane, opposite Coastguards Parade.

Dog waste bin near Barrack Lane, by footpath to Pryors Lane
Unusually this bin is not labelled, but an experienced dog owner will recognise it at once. This is quite a large one, so obviously serves quite a large local canine population. It is quite interesting, to some of us, how varied these bins can be, in colour, size, shape, type of opening, materials and how they are labelled, or in the case of this one, not labelled.

Footpath from Barrack Lane to Pryors Lane
This long footpath, with its grass verge, must be a magnet to local dog owners, judging by the provision of a dog waste bin. For those as fascinated by these pieces of street furniture as me, a close-up can be seen here:-

BT modern telephone kiosk, Coastguards Parade, Barrack Lane
This is one of the modern type of BT telephone kiosk, but as demand for public payphones has dramatically decreased, it is perhaps rather surprising to find one surviving in an affluent area like this.

King George VI reigned from late 1936 until his death in early 1952. It is likely therefore, that this postbox was placed here sometime in the period 1937-1952.
