Entrance to Fort Stamford
The fort dates from the 1860s, part of the response to the 1859 Royal Commission report on the defence of the United Kingdom. The building is now used as a health spa and gym. But it was built on the site of a Civil War Parliamentarian fort and as such the site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (ref. 1002544). See also Image

Fort Stamford, north side
One of the so-called Palmerston’s follies, part of a project set in train in 1859 by the Crown Commissioners as potential defences against the threat of invasion by France, which never materialised. Fort Stamford ceased to have any military use after the 1960s. This shows the high walls and ditch on the north side. The fort is a Scheduled Monument.
