The fort dates from the 1860s, part of the response to the 1859 Royal Commission report on the defence of the United Kingdom. The building is now used as a health spa and gym. But it was built on the site of a Civil War Parliamentarian fort and as such the site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (ref. 1002544).
