The "Ell" on the side of the National Trust for Scotland shop.
Apart from being a handy word for "Scrabble" players, the ell was a unit of length standardised in 1661 at 37 inches. See Image

Cathedral Street, Dunkeld
The street connects the High Street to the Cathedral. An information plaque on the wall reads: "Number 9 Cathedral Street was the childhood home of Alexander Mackenzie, first Liberal Prime Minister of Canada. He was born in Logierate, and came here when quite small, emigrating to Canada as a young man. He last visited Dunkeld in 1875".

Dunkeld cross
A similar view to Image twenty years later. Some of the shops and other buildings looked a little different, and there were fewer trees on the far hillside (enabling a view of Hillhead - the large house overlooking the town in the distance).

The little houses of Dunkeld
Late 17th, early 18th century merchants' houses. By the 1940s the houses were falling in to ruin when an appeal was raised by the National Trust for Scotland to renovate and save the houses for the people of the town. The result is clear and the beautiful terrace has lived on in to a new millennium.
