Pipes at Kinlochleven Power Station
Water pipes at the hydroelectric plant built in 1909 to power the aluminium smelter which closed in 2000. The plant, with more modern turbines and alternators, still supplies power to the smelter at Fort William - see http://www.engineering-timelines.com/scripts/engineeringItem.asp?id=1242.

Path by the hydro works, Kinlochleven
Although the aluminium smelter closed in 2000, the hydro plant remains in operation, supplying power to the Lochaber Aluminium Smelter at Fort William with surplus power sold to the grid. The sunlit Beinn na Caillich makes a fine background here. The path from the bridge forms the return loop of the River Leven Trail.

Harnessing a natural resource
There's something of "toys for the boys" in the construction and layout of early mills, factories, and hydro schemes etc. You could be forgiven for thinking that the nation had "something going for it" in those days.
