Railway Station, Fort William
The train is the sleeper service. The locomotive is one of thirty locomotives of this class built for the English, Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS) for use on high-speed mail trains. The EWS decided to purchase the new high-speed 125 mph diesel locomotives to replace most of the Class 47 and Class 86 locomotives already on the mail trains. "Every night except Saturday night, 'Caledonian Sleeper' trains depart from towns and cities all over Scotland, direct to central London arriving in time for breakfast. A little piece of Scotland that will take you right down to the Big Smoke..."

Sleeper going nowhere
I was booked on the sleeper from Fort William to Crewe on 7th July 2005 but events in London on that day resulted in a major change to my journey. There was much disruption to rail transport and the sleeper trains between Scotland and London were cancelled. Intending passengers were accommodated in the sleeper cabins but the train remained stationary in the platform. I resumed my journey the next day on day service trains and arrived home about 12 hours later than expected. This picture was taken at about 21:15, nearly an hour and a half after the scheduled departure time.
