The train is the sleeper service. The locomotive is one of thirty locomotives of this class built for the English, Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS) for use on high-speed mail trains. The EWS decided to purchase the new high-speed 125 mph diesel locomotives to replace most of the Class 47 and Class 86 locomotives already on the mail trains. "Every night except Saturday night, 'Caledonian Sleeper' trains depart from towns and cities all over Scotland, direct to central London arriving in time for breakfast.
