Evening at Fort William
At about 21:15. On the left, the Caledonian Sleeper which was cancelled because of the bombing atrocity which occurred in London on this date. Intending passengers, including myself, were accommodated in the static sleeping cars in the platform and were re-ticketed on day trains on the following day. On the right is a class 37 locomotive - the class usually handled the sleeper in those days. In the centre of the view, a class 156 which was forming the final train of the day to Mallaig.

Fort William Railway Station
The present Fort William station opened on 13 June 1975. It replaced the original terminus which was further west and alongside Loch Linnhe at Station Square, in close proximity to Macbraynes bus station and pier. The old station was a stone built construction featuring a turret and a double arched entranceway. The station had three platforms, and was demolished to make way for a new road. http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/f/fort_william/index.shtml

Fort William station, 1994
View westward, towards the buffer-stops: ex-NBR terminus of West Highland Line from Glasgow, also of the Extension from Mallaig. This is the new station, opened 13/6/75, replacing the original station which was ½-mile further on beside the Loch.

Waiting train at Fort William
The towering hulk of Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain, is seen in the background (top right of the photo) with the odd patch of snow to be seen. As can be seen from my photos taken the previous day, there was a lot more snow up there than is apparent from here.

Fort William Station
The station used to be where today's dual carriageway is, beside Loch Linnhe. I wish the spivs would not use the double arrow. That was our railway, you know the one you could afford to use without a diary. It well over 20 years since I last used the station.
