The grave of Rev. John Welwood, Dron
John Welwood was a Covenanting preacher in the 17th century who died at the tender age of 30. Forbidden by the authorities to bury his body in his hometown of Perth, his friends carried him here to be buried. They had to clamber over the wall to do so because the curate had locked the gate. The angel carving was added in 1731. See Image] and Image]

Rev. John Welwood's grave, Dron
John Welwood was a Covenanting preacher in the 17th century who died at the tender age of 30. Forbidden by the authorities to bury his body in his hometown of Perth, his friends carried him here to be buried. They had to clamber over the wall to do so because the curate had locked the gate. The inscription reads as follows: HERE LYES A FOLLOUER OF THE LAMB THRO’ MANY TRIBULATIONS CAME FOR LONG TIME OF HIS CHRISTIAN RACE WAS PERSECUTE FROM PLACE TO PLACE A SCOTTISH PROPHET HERE BEHOLD JUDGEMENT & MERCY WHO FORETOLD THE GOSPEL BANNER DID DISPLAY CONDEMN’D THE SINS OF THAT SAD DAY. It was sad to see this church in such a bad state of repair. We had come to visit the grave of Rev. John Welwood, a Covenanter preacher in the 17th century. The authorities forbade his burial at Perth, so his friends brought him here to be buried. See Image] and Image]
