John Welwood was a Covenanting preacher in the 17th century who died at the tender age of 30. Forbidden by the authorities to bury his body in his hometown of Perth, his friends carried him here to be buried. They had to clamber over the wall to do so because the curate had locked the gate. The angel carving was added in 1731. See Image] and Image]
