Garth Youth Hostel in 1976, Perth and Kinross
Seen lit by watery morning sunshine on January 1st or 2nd in 1976 (or possibly 1977). I had been a designated tall (I am not very), dark (I was not very) stranger (they knew me already!) at midnight with a lump of coal that they gave me! God bless you, Betty Wallis! :-) This huge country house was built circa 1838 and extended in the same (Gothic) style circa 1880. The house was gifted by the then owner Mrs. MacKenzie Anderson in 1951 to The Scottish Youth Hostel Association in memory of her son who was killed in action in 1940. It was sold by the SYHA in 1983(?) for a mere £18,000 with all its land. This Grade II listed building was riddled with dry rot, and it was unrealistic for the association to pay the enormous cost of repairing and maintaining it.

Gates of Garth
Garth was one of the much missed youth hostels from the days when there was a usable network in Scotland. It closed sometime in the mid 1980s and the building is now a set of self catering flats.

Sign for "garth house"
Garth House was a youth hostel until the 1980s when the contraction of the network really got going. Now it is self catering flats.
