This chapel served the small parish of Pitcarn, which extended around the wall of the castle of Grandtully. It was built around 1533 and enlarged in 1636. In 1883 it briefly became a parish church, but nine years later was abandoned for worship when a new church was built, and for a while it was partly used as a cow byre and farm store.

St Mary's Chapel, Grandtully
Like the majority of Scottish medieval church and chapels, St Mary's was built as a simple rectangular structure. Originally all the opening were in the south wall, where there were two doors - one for the clergy and the other for the layfolk. The doors and windows were blocked when the church passed out of use, and it was then that a new door was cut through the north wall.
