Like the majority of Scottish medieval church and chapels, St Mary's was built as a simple rectangular structure. Originally all the opening were in the south wall, where there were two doors - one for the clergy and the other for the layfolk. The doors and windows were blocked when the church passed out of use, and it was then that a new door was cut through the north wall.
