Garden centre menagerie near Bourne, Lincolnshire
There was a time when gnomes complete with floppy hats and fishing rods adorned our gardens but popular ornaments today include dogs and wild animals such as tigers and gorillas, seen here on display at the Waterside Garden Centre near Bourne, where they even have a couple of giraffes awaiting good homes.

Topiary galleon near Bourne, Lincolnshire
Topiary which dates from Roman times is the art of training plants and trees by clipping the foliage to develop clearly defined shapes, such as this evergreen shrub (Ligustrum jonandrum) which has taken years to transform into a galleon and is currently on display outside the Waterside Garden Centre near Bourne with a price label that no doubt reflects the time and expertise involved. This topiary ship is formed in a metal frame, and has been here for many years. It used to have a price ticket in the thousands of pounds, but that is long gone. The pot is 1.6m in diameter

Garden centre primulas near Bourne, Lincolnshire
Primulas are the cultivated variety of our beloved wild primrose of banks and verges (Primula vulgaris) and the most popular bedding plant for providing a quick dash of spring colour in window boxes and herbaceous borders with the result that garden centres such as here at Waterside near Bourne, are full of them for several months of the year.
