The clock was presented to the town in 1878 by local draper, grocer and clothier James Scott; unusually it had illumination of the dials by a gas supply.

Clock Tower, Downham Market
The clock tower was presented to the town by James Scott in 1878. It was renovated in 2004, The mechanism was refurbished and the chimes reactivated thanks to heritage lottery funding.
The elegant building in the background is the town hall.
