White Hart, 1-2 Sheep Market, Saint Ives
Altered early 18th century Grade II Listed public house. A former coaching inn and hotel probably dating back to the 17th century it was in existence in 1720 and probably the second oldest continuously named inn in St Ives. By the 1881 census records William Stevens as Dealer In Horses & Hotel Proprietor. A search of my directories produced; 1839-1854 William Stafford; 1862 & 1876 unable to locate; 1885 William Stevens; 1898-1903 Mrs Georgina E Anderson; 1910-1914 Jeremiah O'Connor.

Market Toll Office
A toll was levied on all animals to be sold in the market, the railway played a big part in market life. Irish cattle were brought down from place like Holyhead to be sold to the local farmers. A large number of cattle would end up grazing the local flood meadows of the River Ouse. A bookmakers occupies the building to continue the animal link.

Old cattle market gatehouses, St Ives, Hunts
View from inside the bus station (formerly the cattle market), i.e. opposite to Image The building on the left is now an inquiry office run by Whippet Coaches, and the one on the right is used by Huntingdonshire District Council.
