A toll was levied on all animals to be sold in the market, the railway played a big part in market life. Irish cattle were brought down from place like Holyhead to be sold to the local farmers. A large number of cattle would end up grazing the local flood meadows of the River Ouse. A bookmakers occupies the building to continue the animal link.
