Vernatt's Drain
The artificial river known as Vernatt's Drain, seen from Sharp's Bridge. The farm on the right is The Yews Farm on the map. There is a public footpath along the embankment on the left. We are looking west here, toward (at some distance) Pode Hole. The visible bridge is a small unnamed footbridge near the railway line, that gives access to the other bank because there is no public access along the bank next to the farmyard.

Sharp's Bridge
In the days when this was the A16 road there would have been an unbroken line of traffic in both directions. Now it is far quieter. The concrete balustrade dates from the 1930s. The bridge crosses Vernatt's Drain, the artificial river that drains much of the fenland to the west. The earlier bridge, dating from 1806, was widened in the 1930s to take the traffic, and a keystone from the older bridge is preserved at the Pode Hole pumping station. A photograph of the older bridge can be seen at http://www.southhollandlife.com/2015/01/sharps-bridge-spalding/

Willows at The Yews Farm
The Victorian farm at the side of Vernatt's Drain is named for the trees in front of the house, but there is a fine weeping willow (Salix × sepulcralis) overhanging drain and bridge
