In the days when this was the A16 road there would have been an unbroken line of traffic in both directions. Now it is far quieter. The concrete balustrade dates from the 1930s. The bridge crosses Vernatt's Drain, the artificial river that drains much of the fenland to the west. The earlier bridge, dating from 1806, was widened in the 1930s to take the traffic, and a keystone from the older bridge is preserved at the Pode Hole pumping station.
