The Croft at Bourne, Lincolnshire
This imposing property standing in its own grounds and approached from the main North Road by a driveway was built by a local corn merchant in 1922 and remained a family home until 2004 when a planning controversy began over proposals to build houses on the surrounding meadowland. The dispute was settled in 2009 when developers began work on an estate of 68 bungalows for the over-fifties, now almost complete, while The Croft has been refurbished for use as a community centre but is often wrongly referred to by the developers as “the old manor house” although it has no connection whatsoever with either of Bourne’s two ancient manors.

Cherry blossom in Queen?s Road, Bourne, Lincolnshire
The residential areas built on farmland to the north east of Bourne as part of the housing boom following the Second World War were planted with ornamental trees along the verges such as this flowering cherry in Queen's Road which was under construction in 1953, the year that Queen Elizabeth II was crowned and so the name reflected this national celebration.

The Croft rebuilt
The controversial redevelopment at the Croft has led to the old building being repaired and renovated, almost to the point of being unrecognisable. The builder's sales literature continually refers to it as a Manor House, which is nonsense, it was built in the early 20th century as a family home.
