This alleyway was built as the way the general public got access to the Sorting Office at the back of the post office. The idea was to separate foot traffic from the vehicles going in and out of the yard. It was closed a week after the post office opened. Separation is now done by time. The collection counter is only open at times when no van traffic ought to be taking place. The public uses the rear gates in the car park. This boundary appears to have some antique significance. I discuss it further as an alignment to Image

Spotted outside the Post Office in West Street on a sunny Sunday evening in summer was this vintage car in perfect condition. There was no one in it but anticipating questions from the curious, the owner had left a notice in the back window saying: "My name is Herbie. I am a 1929 Austin Burnham 16.6 and have been in the same family since new. I am used every day and have covered over one million miles on the same engine. I was used as a taxi during the war and have even stood in as an ambulance. I am 73 years old this year and no, I am not for sale!"

Purpose built around 1990, the Post Office have twice tried to close this office as "uneconomic" or "unsuitable" and yet I have not heard of anyone involved in the design or construction getting the sack. We live in a strange country, where public servants can do things without consequences.

On West Street.

Although the Royal Mail’s Bourne delivery office is located behind the main post office in West Street, security remains high and new measures were installed in 1998 to deter intruders including entrance gates surmounted by spikes and sharp metal blades around the top of the perimeter wall. The Baptists in Bourne date back to 1645, part of the non-conformist upswelling of the Civil War era. The present church was built in 1835. In recent years it has been extensively restored and is home to a very lively, forward-looking congregation.
