Dunlossit House, Port Askaig, Islay
This impressive baronial-style mansion, perched above Port Askaig on Islay, is appropriately lived in by a Baron, namely Baron Bruno Schroder, of a Prussian aristocratic family. His father, Helmut Schroder bought the house in 1937 and the island's lifeboat is named after this original nobleman as the family contributed a large percentage of the boat's purchase price. In fact this is the second time they have done this. The house was built originally in 1865, but was rebuilt and much enlarged between 1909 and 1911. This view of the grand mansion is from the little ferry port at Feolin Ferry on the neighbouring island of Jura, looking across the Sound of Islay.
