Dunselma Castle, Strone
The conspicuous Dunselma Castle, is in fact not really a castle, but a large house. The "castle" was built for James Coats - whose fortune had come from the Paisley textile manufacturer "J.P.Coats and sons". It was built in 1886 in the Scottish baronial style as a yachting lodge. It has had numerous uses since, including being a hostel for a while. Dunselma - former Strone Youth Hostel
Built 1884-6 as a sailing lodge by James Coats Jnr, it was later acquired by the Scottish Youth Hostels Association and run as a hostel between 1941 - 1967. It is now privately owned.
