John Galt memorial plaque
On the side of a shop at the corner of Westburn Street and West Blackhall Street. The inscription reads "Here John Galt dwelt at his death 11th April 1839". Galt (1779-1839) was a novelist and entrepreneur, born in Irvine but spend much of his life in Greenock. A friend of Lord Byron. Plaque for John Galt
The text is legible in the picture, but is reproduced below (so that this item can be located by searches): "Here John Galt dwelt at his death 11th April 1839" As shown in Image, the plaque is fixed to a wall at the corner of West Blackhall Street and Westburn Street (that seems to be the older and correct spelling, even though the street sign there currently says "West Burn Street"). The corner is shown in Image, and the plaque can be seen in that picture: it is on the wall on the Westburn Street side (the right), above a large red bin. See also Image / Image / Image

The Oak Mall
A 1960s/70s shopping precinct which was extended and roofed in the 1990s. Best seen from the inside. This is the west end of the mall at the junction of Westburn Street and West Blackhall Street.
