The site of Chipping Norton Castle
The site which is not open to the public is little more than a few earthworks. This does not appear to be the most appropriate position for a castle because it is not in the highest location in Chipping Norton.

Chipping Norton castle was a Norman motte and bailey, built in timber. The earthworks, all that remain, are extensive.

Richard Croft
Alabaster tomb of Richard and Anne Croft c1509 in St.Mary's church, revealed in 2011 after a hundred years hidden behind a pipe organ console. Richard Croft Esq. died on October 3rd 1502 and Anne died in 1509. The Croft family were powerful landowners in the Welsh Marches and had their family seat at Croft Castle http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1364686 in Herefordshire. Richard Croft was born in 1437, the third son of William Croft, he became Lord of the Manor of Chipping Norton at the end of the 15th century, Keeper of the Royal Park at Woodstock, a Justice of the Peace and MP for Oxfordshire in 1472 & 1475.
