The Squire Bassett (1), 174 Oxford Road, Kidlington
The building dates from 1936, when it was built to provide accommodation for travellers. Originally it was named the Day Inn. At that time, art deco designs were very popular, and this building shows some art deco features. In later years the use changed to a conventional pub with food, and at some point the name changed to the Squire Bassett. The Bassetts were a well-known local family. The pub was for a while known as the Dogwood, but has reverted to its present name. Image Image

The Squire Bassett (2) - sign, 174 Oxford Road, Kidlington
It's always nice to come across a really imaginative pub sign such as this. The bassett hound was the badge of the old and well-known Bassett family of Kidlington. This is the origin of the pub's present name. It has had others in the past. The Bassett family badge can be seen in one of the windows of Kidlington's Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin. This part of Kidlington is known as Garden City. I don't know why. Most of Kidlington is mid 20th century residential streets not that different to this one.
