On the left is the wooden vertical mainshaft. The lever, wheel and chain are part of the sack hoist mechanism. This is friction driven off the underside of the wallower. The stairs lead to the cap.

A glimpse of Wheatley Mill
The sail cloths are installed for National Mills Weekend 2017. However, the sails were running away in gusty conditions without the load from the grinding stones and a few tugs on the brake brought the mill to a stop. This highlights the difference between traditional and patent sails where the area of sail can be reduced by adjusting the angle of the flaps.

Wheatley Windmill - the wallower
This mill is all wooden gearing and this shows the wallower engaging with the larger brake wheel. The friction drive to the sack hoist is off the underside of the wallower and is right of bottom centre. The gear for winding the mill is seen on the curb in the background.
