The Chequers Inn (2) - sign, 6 The Green, Cassington
The Chequers Inn was for a while a free house, but is now owned by Young's. Previously the sign showed a chequerboard pattern, but Young's replaced that with the current sign. The Chequers is a not uncommon name for pubs and inns, but various theories exist as to the origin of the name, and people can't agree which is correct. Popular ones include (1) that it is derived from the name of an ingredient used in beer making in medieval times, and (2) that it derives from a Roman sign to indicate taverns or inns which provided a banking facility and that the word Exchequer is derived from this. The Chequers Inn (1), 6 The Green, Cassington
A popular and attractive inn, owned by Young's, and which offers accommodation as well as providing food and drink. However all is not what it might at first seem. The inn may look as if it has been standing here for at least three hundred years, but in fact the building is only about ten years or so old. The original Chequers Inn was demolished as part of a redevelopment scheme to provide a new village hall. The scheme included a new row of cottages of traditional appearance, built from local stone, and a new Chequers Inn, which it what we see here. To the right can be glimpsed the Parish Church. Image

The golden stone of the inn is glowing in the afternoon sun. Shame it out-shines the church!
