The Chequers Inn was for a while a free house, but is now owned by Young's. Previously the sign showed a chequerboard pattern, but Young's replaced that with the current sign. The Chequers is a not uncommon name for pubs and inns, but various theories exist as to the origin of the name, and people can't agree which is correct. Popular ones include (1) that it is derived from the name of an ingredient used in beer making in medieval times, and (2) that it derives from a Roman sign to indicate taverns or inns which provided a banking facility and that the word Exchequer is derived from this.
