St Cross Road, Oxford
Although they 'neighbour' each other, the church on the left with its own cemetery and the cemetery on the left exist as separate entities. The south-facing church window belongs to a Grade I-listed redundant church - St Cross - that now houses the Balliol College Historic Records Collection, whilst these graves on the right are in Holywell Cemetery. The gated entrance to Holywell Cemetery is behind the photographer and is easy to miss as a result of being set back from the normal St Cross Road building line. This boundary wall in the centre of the picture separates these two distinct locations.

St Cross Road, Oxford
At the northern end of Longwall Street (a road that runs along the west side of Magdalen College) Longwall Street becomes St Cross Road. This redundant church, adjacent to Holywell Cemetery (off right) is still known as St Cross Church but now houses Balliol College's Historic Collections Centre. It can be accessed by researchers 'by appointment' and by members of the public on Open Days. The chancel is C11th or C12th and the nave is thought to have been built c.1160. The tower and aisles were added in the C13th century and the upper stage of the tower rebuilt in 1464.

Holywell Cemetery, Oxford
In the mid C19th, when the graveyards of the six parishes in central Oxford became full, Merton College made a plot of land available in 1847 to form this cemetery. This lodge was built in 1850 for an anticipated line of successive keepers. The secured gate on the right leads to some adjacent Halls of Residence, whereas the cemetery gate is to the photographer's right. In fact the wooden entrance gate is easy to miss as a result of it being set back from the normal building line on St Cross Road.

Holywell Cemetery, Oxford
This former cemetery keeper’s lodge - built in 1850 - forms the back drop to a grave, immediately behind the ferns, shared by the remains of Kenneth Grahame (d.1932), author of “Wind in the Willows” and his son Alastair, an undergraduate of Christ Church College, who died 12 years earlier in tragic circumstances. The cemetery entrance/exit is on the right-hand side of the lodge.

Holywell Church (Chapel of St Cross), Oxford
The Church in Holywell was originally a chapel belonging to the Church of St Peter-in-the-East, and was dedicated to the Holy Cross (hence its name, St Cross).
In 1957, when St Peter-in-the-East Church closed down, Holywell (St Cross) Church took over its parish.
In 2008 Holywell Church closed down after over 800 years of worship, and is now Balliol Historic Collections Centre. The University Church of St Mary-the-Virgin will take over its former parish.
