Seen from Fields New Road. Modern industry is on a much smaller scale here.

Nile Mill
This is now in multiple occupancy and showing signs of distress. In its heyday it was powered by a monstrous twin beam triple expansion engine (6 cylinders in total). I felt naughty and nervous - not because of the mill but because of the children bottom left.

Nile Mill, Hollinwood
Never mind "Dark Satanic Mills" I prefer "Britain's bread hangs by Lancashire's thread". Cotton spinning mill that was powered by a very large beam engine. No longer used for textiles and with a truncated chimney. I suspect this view is now obscured by increased vegetation.

I am looking over two sets of fences to get this end on view of the engine house and truncated chimney.

Chadderton Mill
I'm stood on a fence to look over a taller fence. Good result though. I'm on the edge of the site of Mona Mill, now a housing estate (aaagh!). Chadderton Mill was designed by P S Stott for the Chadderton Mill Co and built in 1885 (name and date on top end of engine house). In 1915 there were 102,456 spindles turned by a 1100 hp Hick, Hargreaves engine. This is one of the few mills to retain a lodge but it is lost in foreground clutter.

Nile Mill
Courtyard along the east front. There are blocked-up openings in the wall to the left which are probably World War II air raid shelters.

Chadderton Mill
Although imposing, this early tower does not show the richness of detailing that appears on many later mills.
