Spinners Arms (2) - sign, 287 Manchester Road, Hollinwood, Oldham
The sign is the only indication that this is a public house. It is owned by Samuel Smith, the independent family owned brewery of Tadcaster in Yorkshire. Many pubs in Victorian times were named after local trades and industries. Many people living in Hollinwood in that period were employed in Oldham's cotton mills. This no doubt gave rise to the name of this pub. It appears in the 1891 census under its present name but at 289 Manchester Road. Presumably there was a later street re-numbering or the pub expanded into the adjoining property. Image

Spinners Arms (1), 287 Manchester Road, Hollinwood, Oldham
This is a Samuel Smith pub, not that you would know that, as some years ago this independent brewery from Tadcaster in Yorkshire made the unusual decision to remove all its branding from its pubs. All the beers their pubs sell come from the brewery. The name of the pub only appears on its sign. There is a small beer garden at the rear. Image
